Hamilton is the hub of the great Waikato region. The fourth largest City in New Zealand is home to some of the most spectacular gardens in the country and is bisected by the mighty Waikato River. The Waikato is the longest river in the country and was once a significant trading route and essential food source. Today it is best explored aboard the MV Waipa Delta, a replica of the 110 year old paddle steamer. Cruises and jet boat rides also operate on the river. Visit Hamilton Zoo, a wildlife conservation park which covers 21 acres and is home to over 400 animals. A giant free flight aviary full of native birds is the largest of it’s kind in the southern hemisphere and a great way to get up close and personal with New Zealand’s intriguing native birds. Tigers, rhinoceros and lemurs are just a few of the other residents who live in the impressive habitat based enclosures & natural landscaped grounds. Hamilton has it’s own Art trail which you can follow on foot. Discover the works of seventeen local artists along this interesting trail. The Waikato Museum of Contemporary Art and History has a comprehensive collection of Maori taonga (treasures) to emerse yourself in. Try your luck at the Skycity casino for a night of fun amongst the many gaming tables and machines. Take a trip to ‘Woodlands’, an 1872 historic homestead which has been lovingly restored to it’s original grace and charm.
Catch a match at Waikato Stadium which regularly hosts rugby, league and soccer games. Enjoy the unlimited freedom and unique landscape of the Waikato through the eyes of a hot air balloon trip or try the serene art of gliding as a new experience.
